SOAP

What is SOAP?

SOAP is a method of reading the bible that invites you to engage, understand, and reflect on what you are reading. SOAP helps us to not just read the Word but to see the power and beauty of it, learn who God is, and take the time to discover what God is saying to us today.

SOAP stands for Scripture, Observation, Application, Prayer

How to use the SOAP Method:

  1. Begin with reading the Scripture on Day 1 in your Bible. Take your time reading. Highlight and write down any verses or words that particularly stand out to you.

  2. Observation invites you to ask some questions to dive deeper into what you’ve just read. What is the overall message? Who is talking? Who are they talking to? Are there any commands, truths or warnings? What might God be saying to you through His Word?

  3. Application takes what you’ve read and observed and asks, what is God asking me to do because of this? How can I apply this to my life?

  4. As you end your time, ask God, through Prayer, to help you apply His Word to your life. Thank Him for what you learned and ask Him to help you understand anything you didn’t.

Example:

Scripture: Seeing their faith, Jesus said to the man, “Young man, your sins are forgiven.” - Luke 5:20

Observation: Jesus noticed that the friends of the paralyzed man had faith that Jesus could heal him. He first forgave the man’s sins and then healed him physically.

Application: I need to have the same faith as that man’s friends and trust that Jesus can heal my situation. He has the power to forgive AND to heal!

Prayer: Jesus, thank you for forgiving me of my sins. Please help me to walk with the same faith in you that these friends had. I believe that you have the power to heal my situation and so I ask you to please do so. In your name, amen.
